フリック(flick)入力　VS　トグル入力

 

【トグル入力】とは

携帯電話やスマートホンでの文字の入力方法の一。

一つのキーに五十音の一行やアルファベット3～4字が割り当てられ、キーを押す回数によって入力すべき文字を選択する。

たとえば「1」のキーは「あ行」であり、「1」を押すたびに「あ・い・う・え・お」と変換される。

使用するキーの数は少なくてすむが、押す回数は多くなりやすい。トグル打ち。マルチタップ入力。

 

【フリック入力】とは

《flick input》タッチパネル式ディスプレーで、フリック操作によって文字を入力する方式。

スマートホンやタブレット型端末の多くで採用される。

画面には、仮名 (かな) またはアルファベットの一部がテンキーに似た配列で表示される。

ある文字に触れると、その周囲にABC順で隣接するアルファベットや五十音順で同じ行の仮名が表示され、いずれかをフリックで選択することで文字が入力できる。

What are two Japanese keyboards on the phone called? Which is used more? Also how do you write diacritics on the weirder one?

The "weirder" one is a flick (フリック) keyboard. You write diacritics with the button in the lower left hand corner of the 3x4 rectangle in the middle (below the ま button).

The best app for this that I've personally been able to find is simeji. You can also find apps to practice with by searching for フリック(+maybe 入力)+練習, etc.

I think in Japan the flick keyboard is used slightly more, mostly because for natives and people very experienced in the language it's a lot faster to type with and you can do it with 1 hand. But on reddit I hear it's a toss-up. Still, most people I know here in Japan use the flick keyboard, young and old.

I've also found that sometimes my "regular" (non-flick) keyboard won't give me the right kanji suggestions, especially for rarer kanji like names (though it often seems to give bad predictions for normal words too, especially if they're conjugated), and it frustrates the hell out of me because in that case I often have no choice but to use the flick keyboard (which I'm still a bit slow with). Also, flick keyboards have the added bonus of 顔文字. Luckily, on iphone it's easy to switch between keyboards, but in my experience with Android, at least, it's a pain (though simeji on Android does have a normal English keyboard as well, but without suggestions, so you'll make a lot of typos with it). Basically, you're lucky if you have an iPhone, because in that case switching won't be such a problem, and so you can quickly switch back to regular input when you feel like flick is too slow (i.e. when you're still learning), and you can quickly switch to flick when you need 顔文字 or more accurate predictions.

It takes practice to get used to, like any keyboard, and the more Japanese you know the easier it will get to practice with. You'll find people (possibly who aren't fluent...?) telling you it doesn't matter which one you use, but you'll also find people who say it's good to be able to use the flick keyboard. It depends on what you want. I personally like the convenience of the flick keyboard, and I can't wait for the day when I can use it exclusively (except when I need to type in English...frickin Android complicating the keyboard switching process...you'd think it wouldn't be this complicated...).
